Today marks 17 years since Saddam Hussein unleashed a poison gas attack against Kurdish villages in Halabja. An estimated 7,000 civilians were killed:
Halabja was bombarded with a concoction of chemical weapons which included mustard gas, and the nerve gases sarin, tabun and VX. Five to seven thousand people of 80,000 inhabitants died immediately and a further 20,000 to 30,000 were injured, many severely... Inexpensive in terms of death per unit cost, there is evidence that these weapons were used in different combinations by Ba’ath forces attempting to discern their effectiveness as weapons of terror and war.
One parent recalls the gassing:
"I was running, filled with the giant strenghth of panic, with a child tucked under each arm. Behind us, our village was filling w
ith the white clouds of gas. We only just got out. The gas was coming fast behind us and it was threatening to catch us. I turned round and I could see my wife running a little way behind me. She also had two children to carry. My wife's face was twisted in an expression which I do not like to remember. You see, we had five children, not four, but we could only carry two each. I shall never forget that small figure of my son, running along following me, reaching out his arms, begging me not to leave him. As God is my witness, I never loved him more than at that moment."
Three wars (Iran-Iraq, Gulf War I, Gulf War II), a strident debate over weapons of mass destruction, the arrest of Saddam Hussein, and seventeen years later, Halabja almost seems like ancient history. The human ability to move on and cope, even in the face of genocide, is a marvel.
We can either take satisfaction in the knowledge that Saddam Hussein can no longer gas thousands of civilians with impunity - or we can look at the world's inablility to stop the genocidal actions of Omar Al-Bashir in Sudan and wonder if history is repeating itself.

I just need a list of liquid chemicals to test for my science fair project. I know some of you might say it is unsafe to add some solvents to different liquid chemicals, but for now, I just need a good list of liquid chemicals to add it. I'll do my research on these chemicals and see if it will be safe or not.

Thanks! Very helpful information. Here's a great tip from women who did it and worked too: Exercise, eat healthy, and take a long hot bath or shower. Also, write in your journal to relieve stress - These are one of the many effective ways to relieve PMS problems. If this does not work, visit my site to have great relief.

There’s nowhere to hide. You can’t blame office politics, bad bosses or co-workers, or anything else. It’s much more difficult to have a bad day or even take time off (ask freelancers if it’s harder to go on vacation…) because of the responsibility to keep things chugging along.

Yay! Can’t wait to do this project again! I loved doing this last year, and I adore my finished album. I have been collecting supplies since August – is that too keen? :). Thank you for the extras this time round, Shimelle. I’m particularly looking forward to seeing the printables and the photography workbook. You’re a creative genius!
