The cause of free speech in the Middle East has lost one of its most prominent icons. Zouhair Yahyaoui, founder of the Tunisian dissident website TUNeZine, has just died of a heart attack at age 36. Yahyaoui burst onto the scene in with TUNeZine 2001. In May of 2002, he ran an online poll on TUNeZine asking if Tunisia was "a) a republic, b) a kingdom, c) a zoo, or d) a prison."
Yahyaoui was promtply dragged out of a Tunis internet cafe by security forces, tortured, and sentenced to two years in prison. After an international protest campaign, Yahyaoui was released from prison. He appears to have died of natural causes. A contributor to TUNeZine offers a personal memorial (French).
Invoking humor as a response to repression is a wonderful human trait. Yahyaoui embodied that spirit and paid the price from the humorless regime of Tunisian dictator Zine Ben Ali. He also inspired the other contributors to TUNeZine, who will hopefully carry on his legacy. Tempi passati.
