How do you picture Tehran in your mind?
Mysterious old alleyways? Third-world Afghanistan-esque shanties? Small coffee shops filled with young dissidents and furtive lovers slying bending taboos?
The city has all of these, but as one Tehran native summed it up: "Tehran looks like L.A."
Which may explain why so many Iranians who have fled repression back home have taken up residence in Los Angeles, a.k.a. "Tehrangeles."
This aerial shot reveals at least a passing resemblance.
What makes the private gathering particularly unusual is that it united not only activists from a range of political ideologies, but also from the external and internal opposition.
