The Tharwa Project - the minority rights initiative founded in Syria several years ago - has a new project and a new virtual home: Tharwa Community. Tharwa means "wealth" in Arabic, and the project's name reflects an emphasis on seeing diversity and difference as positives. In other words, it's an inherent rejection of dogmatic pan-Arabism and Islamist supremacy.
The growing crackdown on dissent by the Assad regime has forced Tharwa to temporarily decamp to Lebanon and to the virtual territory of the web. The latest project is a group blog on the issues of diversity, gender, and non-violence. (We're proud to be linked as a partner.)
For a sample of the new work, check out Tharwalizations.
