Saudi Update: Youth Gone Wild, Sufis Get Some Respect

Two random stories about spinning in Saudi Arabia. The first involves sports cars, the second Sufis. Both come via Elaph, which would be even cooler if they translated their stories into English.

Apparently the Saudi youth (as well as young men across the Gulf - and around the world) dig driving recklessly. The newest pasttime for bored kids is to do sports car acrobatics: gunning the engine, jerking the wheel, and hitting the breaks all at once. Adding to the danger are the clueless spectators lining the roadway, just feet from the fast'n'furious racers. According to Elaph, thanks to the car-dancing fad, Porsche prices are up 30% in the past year. The Saudi government is now building a stadium to cut back on deaths and injuries to bystanders. Spinning in circles has roots in Arabia long before sportscars. (Nice transition, huh?) Elaph is also reporting that restrictions on Sufi sects in Saudi Arabia are finally being relaxed. After facing various forms of repression, Saudi authorities are allowing more room for Sufi practice (one example is depicted in the photo above).

Now it would be great to harness all this energy for civic activism. Meanwhile, enjoy the photos and video.
