Last time Arnold Schwarzenegger and George Clooney got together, it was for the movie Batman & Robin. But yesterday the unlikely duo come together with a large group of prominent Democrats and Republicans, as well as student activists, to announce that California will no longer be doing business with Sudan.
The state has an employee workforce and a pension fund larger than those of many countries. It's a large financial blow to the Sudanese regime, presided over oh-so ably since 1989 by General Omar Al-Bashir. The bill signed by Schwarzenegger prevents the California pension fund from investing money in any companies doing business in Sudan. It's yet another example of how globalization, in certain ways, empowers American activists to hold far-away regimes accountable.
Kudos also go out to the student activists at SudanDivestment.org, one of whose leaders joined Clooney and actor Don Cheadle (of Hotel Rwanda fame) at the signing ceremony. The Sudan divestment movement has been led by students for several years, and this bill signing is but one of a string of small successes.
Watch a video of the signing ceremony here.
Great news!
By the way, thank you for your unique blog. You're reporting news that are otherwise woefully underreported.
