Khatami in Hot-Water for Shaking Woman's Hand

Ex-Iranian President Mo Khatami is sort of like the Al Gore of Persian politics. He's technically out of power, but he's got a cause that keeps him in the spotlight: the "dialogue of civilisations." For Khatami, this essentially means hobnobbing with glowing audiences in the West. He shows up at conferences, gives talks filled with platitudes, gets a hefty speaker's fee, smiles incessantly, and shakes lots of hands.

But it's that seemingly innocuous hand-shaking that has created a problem for Khatami back in Iran. An amateur video up on You Tube has caught the cleric red-handed: shaking women's hands!  "Hard-liners" in Iran are making a big fuss over Khatami's clumsy handling, shaking their fists and calling for the ex-president to be man-handled:

"Recently a video has been circulating on the Internet showing a former top official visiting Italy, shaking the hands with several women and young girls," said the Siasat-e Rouz daily, one of Iran's most ultraconservative papers.

"We do not want to publish the address of the Internet site where this film can be seen, in order to avoid propagating corruption in society," it added.
